Canadian Volunteers Spend Week of Service with Mama Ibado Charity
In July 2025, a group of Canadian volunteers spent a week in Kenya with Mama Ibado Charity (MIC), taking part in a series of impactful activities that touched the lives of seniors, youth, and schoolgirls across Isiolo and Kakamega counties.
From distributing sanitary pads to schoolgirls in Kakamega, to helping build a new home for a senior beneficiary, to supporting more than 700 patients at a seniors’ medical camp, their visit was marked by compassion, hands-on service, and cultural exchange.
The journey began in Kakamega, where the volunteers joined a pads-giving day for schoolgirls. The initiative, part of MIC’s broader dignity program, seeks to keep girls in school by addressing barriers caused by the lack of menstrual products. “It was a simple but powerful gesture that can change the course of a girl’s education,” one volunteer remarked.

In Isiolo, the group turned their attention to housing, lending their energy and skills to the construction of a new home for beneficiary Boju Duba. Working alongside local builders, they hammered nails, painted walls, and shared in the joy of creating a safe and dignified place for Boju to call home.
A highlight of the week was their participation in the groundbreaking ceremony for MIC’s upcoming Seniors Community Center. Once completed, the center will serve as a hub for healthcare, social engagement, and support services for vulnerable seniors. MIC’s President and Founder, Ahmed Jibril, described the moment as “a milestone in our mission to restore dignity to the elderly.”
The volunteers also took time to connect with the younger generation by organizing a football tournament at Bula Mpya School. The spirited matches brought together students, teachers, and community members in an atmosphere of fun, teamwork, and encouragement.
Later in the week, they participated in a meet-and-greet event with MIC beneficiaries, listening to stories, sharing laughter and dance, and building bonds that transcended borders. The visit concluded on a powerful note with the Seniors Medical Camp in Isiolo, where the team supported doctors and staff in welcoming and guiding hundreds of elderly patients through free medical consultations and treatments.
Reflecting on the visit, MIC President Ahmed Jibril said: “The kindness of our Canadian friends reminds us that dignity has no borders. Their contributions have uplifted our seniors and strengthened the spirit of global solidarity.”
For the Canadian volunteers, the experience was equally transformative. “We came to give, but we are leaving with so much more, the wisdom and resilience of the seniors have touched our hearts deeply,” one volunteer shared.
