The Power of Friendship in Times of Need

The Power of Friendship in Times of Need

Leah, Fanisi, and Mary found friendship when they needed it most. Though they had lived in the same area for years, their paths had rarely crossed—until they met at the Mama Ibado Charity (MIC) offices. Each of them was struggling to make ends meet, unable to provide food for themselves and their dependents. In the face of poverty, friendships often dwindle as everyone fights their own battles. However, for these three women, their meeting at MIC marked the beginning of a lifelong bond.

Their connection quickly became a pillar of support, not just for them but also for their families. Living about 15 minutes apart in Al-Karim, an informal settlement, they began walking together to collect their food rations. Over time, they developed a habit of looking out for one another—whether it was accompanying a friend to MIC offices when in need of medical assistance or simply offering emotional support during tough times.

This friendship soon blossomed into something more structured. As beneficiaries of the Inua Jamii program, they received a small stipend, which they combined with contributions from their children. Determined to improve their situation, they formed a savings group, or Chama. Through this initiative, they have been able to supplement their income, helping one another pay school fees, purchase uniforms, and seek medical care for their grandchildren.

Their journey is a powerful testament to the strength found in unity. Leah, Fanisi, and Mary prove that in the most challenging times, friendship can be a lifeline—turning individual struggles into shared resilience and collective triumph.
