Flora Karima Kariuki’s journey with Mama Ibado Charity began indirectly, through her husband, who had been enrolled as a beneficiary of the organization. At the time, Flora and her husband were supporting a household that included several orphaned children. Though their circumstances were difficult, the monthly food packages they received offered crucial relief. The support helped ensure there was food on the table each month and gave them space to focus on other pressing needs within their home. The consistency of the food assistance brought much-needed stability to a family living with limited resources. However, not long after her husband’s enrollment, Flora’s life took an unexpected turn. Her husband fell gravely ill. She took him to a hospital in Nanyuki in search of treatment, but despite the care he received, he sadly passed away during his admission.
In the weeks that followed, Flora was left to manage the household by herself. The children under her care still depended on her, but now she had to carry the full responsibility—emotionally and financially. Amid the burden of grief and daily survival, she had not yet informed Mama Ibado Charity of her husband’s passing. When she eventually made her way to the charity office to share the news, she was unsure of what to expect. Her husband had been the official beneficiary—would the food assistance end with him? Would she now have to find a way forward without that support?
To her relief, Flora received empathy and compassion. The Mama Ibado Charity team listened to her story and reassured her that she would not be forgotten. She was informed that after a six-month transition period, she would be eligible to join the program as a direct beneficiary. True to their word, six months later, Flora was enrolled into the program. She now receives monthly food packages in her own name—allowing her to continue caring for the children in her home without disruption. The support has been vital, not just in meeting her basic needs, but in giving her the confidence and strength to keep going after an incredibly difficult period of loss and adjustment.
Today, Flora lives with a renewed sense of stability. While the challenges of caring for a household remain, she faces them with the reassurance that Mama Ibado Charity continues to walk alongside her.
Her story highlights the charity’s long-term commitment to its beneficiaries and their families. For Flora, what began as support for her husband has become a lifeline for her entire home.
