Forced to leave school at Class Five, she was thrust into the demanding work of a housekeeper, spending decades washing clothes and tilling land just to put food on the table.

Life became even more difficult when the father of her two children abandoned the family early on, leaving the full responsibility of raising them on Josephine’s shoulders. With little pay and at times no work at all, there were many nights when they went to bed hungry.
