In Amalemba, Kakamega, 64-year-old Margaret Mmbone has turned a simple maize stand into a symbol of her unyielding spirit. Her journey, marked by hardship and resilience, began in Vihiga County, where poverty cut her education short. A painful separation from her husband left her to raise 5 children alone, compelling her to seek a new life in Kakamega. It was there that she started her small cereal business, a venture that became her lifeline.

This venture became her lifeline. However, her entrepreneurial spirit was soon challenged by her health. She suffers from arthritis, high blood pressure, and goiter, conditions that severely limit her ability to work. "Due to my health issues, my business hours are limited to daylight hours," she explained. The cold and rain force her to close shop, and she cannot stay open late into the evening. These limitations made it difficult to expand her business and, at times, to even make enough money to get by.

Margaret’s story took a turn for the better when she connected with the Mama Ibado Charity. This organization has become a crucial pillar of support, helping her manage her health and daily needs. The charity provides her with regular food supplies, including flour, sugar, cooking oil, and rice. "I am so grateful for the support," she says with a voice full of gratitude.

In addition to food, the charity also offers her access to weekly clinics where she can get medication to manage her chronic health conditions. This consistent medical care has been life-changing. With the burden of food costs lifted, Margaret’s small maize business can now focus on covering essential expenses like rent.

“As of right now, my small business just handles rent payments because I already have food,” she says, highlighting the direct impact of the charity's assistance.
