Martin Zakayo Shilako

Martin Zakayo Shilako was born on January 1, 1949, in the village of Matende. He was raised in a large household of seven children, consisting of four girls and three boys.

He began his education at Matende Primary School, where he remained until reaching standard four. In 1962, he sat for the KAPE examinations with hopes of progressing to the intermediate level. Unfortunately, his parents, who were humble farmers, passed away and left him without the financial means to pay for Class 5.

Following the end of his schooling, Martin remained in the village taking on any available menial tasks to survive. He eventually moved to Nairobi, where he secured employment working for Indian entrepreneurs to earn a living.

In 1969, Martin married and eventually became a father to six children, five girls and one boy. To support his growing family, he worked as a subordinate staff member for the Ministry of Health in Narok, often struggling to provide enough food for everyone. The family faced deep hardship when their only son passed away, leaving Martin to care for six grandchildren amidst the loss.

His life took a difficult turn after he retired in 2004 without a pension, leaving him with no steady income. In 2009, he was attacked by armed robbers at his gate who had just robbed his brother’s house, resulting in his leg being severely broken. Because he could not afford private care, a kind doctor helped him get a metal implant, but the injury ended his ability to perform manual labor.

Martin was eventually introduced to the Mama Ibado Senior program by a concerned neighbor who recognized his dire situation. After submitting his documents and receiving a home visit, he was officially enrolled in the food and health program on January 8, 2025.

"Before joining this program, my family often slept hungry, and the stress of finding the next meal was overwhelming. Now, I have peace of mind knowing there is food on the table, allowing me to focus the little energy I have on my grandchildren's needs."

Beyond the monthly supplies of flour, sugar, rice, and milk, Martin also receives vital medical support through the program. He visits the clinic every Thursday for a regular check-up to manage his condition and monitor his recovery.

He expresses profound gratitude to Mama Ibado for the consistent provision of both nutrition and healthcare that has restored his dignity. Martin continues to require assistance because his physical disability prevents him from working, leaving him entirely dependent on this support to sustain his household.
