In the heart of Majengo, Kakamega, lives a man whose life once echoed with the laughter of schoolchildren and the pride of service. Today, Saleh Hassan Were, 73, faces a far different reality, one defined by hardship, quiet resilience, and an unshakable hope for better days.

Born and raised in Majengo, Saleh’s career as an educator began with a posting at Muslim Primary School. Over the years, he served in numerous institutions across Kakamega County, including Township, Matende, Bukhulunya, and Kakamega Primary Schools. His commitment to education and community was unwavering, touching the lives of many pupils and fellow teachers alike.

He retired from service in 2002. What was meant to be a peaceful retirement, however, has been overshadowed by personal loss and economic hardship.

Saleh lost his first wife several years ago, a devastating blow that left him with two young children to care for on his own. Life grew even more difficult with time. He is now a father of four school-going children, all of whom depend on him for support, guidance, and stability, needs that are becoming harder to meet with each passing day.
“I have no one to turn to,” Saleh admits. “But every month, Mama Ibado Charity provides me with food rations, and that gives me peace of mind, knowing my family won’t go hungry.”

The assistance he receives has become a vital lifeline. It lifts the burden of sourcing daily meals and helps him redirect what little he has toward other pressing needs, including his children’s education. “Once I receive the food, what remains is just a bit here and there to help me get by,” he says.

For Mr. Were, the food aid is more than just sustenance, it is a reminder that he has not been forgotten. After a lifetime of serving others, he is now on the receiving end of compassion, and his gratitude runs deep.
