William Zainab Beatrice

Beatrice Zainab, 62 years old was born in Ikonyero, Kakamega County. Her life has been marked by decades of loss and relentless struggle.

Her hardship began early; she had to leave school in Class Seven after her parents died. Without family support, she married young, but the marriage quickly turned abusive. She fled her alcoholic husband in Amalemba, seeking a new start in Makaburini.

In Makaburini, Beatrice earned a living by fetching and selling water, she suffers from leg and chest injuries that she sustained while trying to earn a living by fetching water to sell. These injuries have affected her ability to work, putting a strain on the entire family.
At one point, she was involved in a road accident while on her way to ask for her pending payment. The accident left her with serious injuries, forcing her to stop the water-selling work she depended on.
 
Without money for treatment, Beatrice couldn’t go to the hospital. She had no choice but to manage the pain and treat herself at home.

She was later widowed, raising her two children alone until tragedy struck again with the loss of her daughter after an operation. This left Beatrice as the sole guardian for her daughter’s children. 

Today, she cares for seven children in total—her grandchildren and nephews. The years of hauling heavy water containers uphill have resulted in persistent chest pain. She sums up the difficult choice: "I know my chest hurts because of carrying water, but what could I do? We needed to eat."

They live in a crumbling mud house with no electricity, and the monthly rent of Sh1,100 is a heavy burden she struggles to meet.

Recognizing these challenges, Mama Ibado Charity provides crucial support through their Seniors Feeding Program. Beatrice and the children rely on the monthly food aid—rice, maize flour, and cooking oil—which gives them the stability of knowing where their next meal will come from. "That food helps us a lot," she says.
